Psychological Therapy

We know that seeking psychological therapy can feel daunting. At Lumen Psychology, we want to provide a space that feels safe to explore and understand what is going on for you.
We will meet for an initial assessment, where we can think together about what brings you to therapy and what might be helpful.

We offer therapy for eating disorders, trauma and PTSD, low mood/ depression, anxiety, OCD, and relationship difficulties. We know that everyone is unique and has their own story about what brings them to therapy. In understanding this and what has led to the difficulties you’re having, it will help us to find a way forward that works for you.

We provide four main types of therapy: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and MANTRA.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT offers people a “here and now” approach to what has been troubling them. It provides understanding of difficulties by looking at the thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours that are keeping painful feelings going. It is a short-term therapy, which takes a proactive approach, and equips people with skills and techniques to help them.  We offer CBT for a variety of difficulties, including:

Low Mood

Anxiety

PTSD and trauma-focused therapy

Eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder  (using CBT-E and CBT-T, specialist forms of CBT for eating disorders)

and Avoidant Restrictive Feeding Intake Disorder (ARFID) (using CBT-AR, a specialist form of CBT for ARFID)

More information on CBT can be found here:

Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT)

CAT offers an understanding of difficulties through the lens of relationships.  It aims to help people understand what experiences they’ve had in their life, which may have led to the development of relationship patterns and experiences later on. It is interested in helping people to understand how they see themselves and their relationships. Later on in the therapy, CAT will help people to change things in their lives and relationships.  The therapy takes a collaborative and proactive approach with the therapist.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR offers a treatment which can help people when particular memories make them feel “stuck”.  It helps to process difficult and painful memories which stop people moving forward in their life.  It is particularly effective for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and helps to process painful memories which are associated with traumatic events. EMDR can also be used with other difficulties too, including depression and anxiety

More information about EMDR can be found here:

MANTRA (Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults)

MANTRA is a therapy specific for people who suffer from anorexia nervosa. It is an integrative approach, meaning that it draws on and combines various treatment models.  It considers areas that people may be struggling with and connected to their eating disorder, including emotions, inflexibility in thinking, and relationships. It also will help people to consider their nutritional intake, and help them to change and increase their intake.
